Medical-Grade Chemical Peels: Brighten Up Dull, Lifeless Skin

With cold, dry, winter weather often comes dull, lifeless skin. Fortunately, if you are searching for a way to brighten up your skin, a medical-grade chemical peel is a great option. Chemical peels work by utilizing chemical substances to accelerate the exfoliation of the top layer of skin. Not only do chemical peels literally help peel away the dullness that many people experience this time of year, they can also help with several other skin concerns. Chemical peels are an excellent treatment option for people looking to help even out skin tone and texture, including fine lines and wrinkles, rough, bumpy skin, and even minor discolorations or sun spots. Medical-grade chemical peels are also often recommended for patients who suffer from certain types of acne, and can even help minimize the pigmentation that often occurs when active acne has resolved.

At ARTisan Skin and Laser Center, we offer three levels of SkinMedica® chemical peels: Illuminize®, Viitalize®, and Rejuvenize™. These options vary between light, medium, and deep resurfacing. Depending on your major concerns and the condition of your skin, the ARTisans help you select the most appropriate peel for your goals.

During your treatment, your provider will cleanse your skin and apply the chemical peel solution. When the peel is complete, they will apply a post-treatment sunscreen to protect your skin from any sun exposure. They will also discuss all post-care instructions with you and send you home with a post-procedure kit that includes all the skincare products you will need during the post-treatment period. Your skin may have a slight yellow tinge immediately following the procedure. This can last anywhere from 2-3 hours.

With these types of peels, most people notice that their skin typically begins peeling between 24-48 hours after the treatment, and you may notice the surface layer of your skin peeling anywhere from 2-5 days. However, it is important to note that not all skin peels as a result of this treatment. Depending on the type of peel selected, and the current condition/health of your skin, skin may not exhibit peeling; however, you are still getting great benefits from the treatment. You may experience some mild itching during this time and your skin may appear slightly pinker than usual. For the week following the procedure, it is important to utilize the post-treatment sunscreen that is in your post-procedure kit and avoid any direct sun exposure. Remember to keep using sunscreen daily even after your healing is complete! As these dead, damaged cells clear out, your skin rejuvenates and repairs itself, revealing a smoother, clearer, brighter complexion.
