As we move through life going 100 mph, we are likely to be impacted by stress at one point or another. Not only does stress have negative consequences for our overall health, it can also speed up the aging process.
When we are stressed, our bodies naturally release hormones. Cortisol, known as the stress hormone, helps us handle stress by limiting functions such as the immune system and reproduction system. During times of high stress, however, too much cortisol in the bloodstream can have a very negative impact on our skin through the breakdown of collagen, the essential protein for elasticity and firmness. Some people also experience dryness, as cortisol lessens the skin’s ability to retain water. Due to the skin’s inability to stay hydrated, sebaceous glands tend to overcompensate with increased oil production leading to inflammation and breakouts. Some people dealing with stress, especially those with rosacea, may also experience a redness and puffy appearance to their skin because of increased blood flow.
If you are suffering from stress, it is important that you are getting enough sleep, taking time throughout the day to recharge, and finding healthy ways to cope, as increased cortisol in the blood stream can have negative health effects to overall health. While you are finding ways to eliminate your stress, you can also be active in taking care of your skin. What steps can we take to maintain our youthful glow?
1. Maintain your daily regimen.
When we are busy and overwhelmed it is tempting to eliminate our skincare routine. Commit to a daily regimen of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. It’s essential to remove the day’s buildup of debris with the cleansing and toning process, while a moisturizer can treat and prevent dry skin with its hydration agents. Products with ceramides and hyaluronic acid are recommended for those suffering from stress induced dry skin, as these ingredients surround each skin cell with lipids, enabling the cell to absorb water.
2. Wear sunscreen.
When it’s nice and sunny outside, a great stress reliever is spending time in the outdoors. But prolonged sun exposure can exaggerate stress induced dry skin and worsen rosacea. The sun is also the number one culprit for premature aging. Ultraviolet rays damage elastin fibers, causing the skin to sag. The best thing you can do for your skin to fight off aging is applying a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 of higher. Though it is easy to run out the door without applying sunscreen, it should be applied daily. You will thank yourself later!
3. Eat healthy foods.
Let’s admit it. We all like to eat when we’re stressed out. But if we are going to snack, why don’t we choose to snack on foods that boost our collagen production? Dark green vegetables are rich in vitamin C and known for boosting this protein. Other great options would be raspberries, blackberries or citrus fruits which help amino acids convert to collagen.
