Implantable Contact Lenses

Phakic Intraocular Lenses (ICL)

ICLs (or Phakic intraocular lenses) are inserted into your eye to minimize the need for glasses or contacts. They are an alternative to LASIK or PRK.

  • LASIK and PRK laser vision correction are often excellent options for patients with refractive errors who are considering a long-term solution for their vision impairment. However, for those with high degrees of nearsightedness and /or astigmatism, these surgeries may not be an appropriate option. In many cases of severe nearsightedness, the cornea is too thin to treat with laser vision correction techniques. When this is the case, surgically implanted contacts called phakic intraocular lenses or implant contact lenses (ICL) may be an excellent alternative. These specialty devices act like semi-permanent contact lenses and work to correct nearsightedness and/or astigmatism, improving your ability to focus without eyeglasses or contact lenses. Dr. Alison R. Tendler, the leader and owner of ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and certified in EVO Visian ICL™ implantable contact lenses, has the extensive knowledge and experience necessary to determine the best treatment option for individuals who seek a long-term solution to their vision needs. Schedule a consultation to learn more about your treatment options.

  • At ART Vision, we offer several ICL solutions. The most popular among our brands include:

The Visian ICL (implantable collamer lens) is placed behind the iris and does not require the natural lens to be removed. This is an excellent alternative to laser vision correction surgeries, like LASIK and PRK, and is the refractive surgery procedure that Dr. Tendler chose for herself. The lens is FDA approved for the correction of nearsightedness and astigmatism.

The Verisyse ICL is an implantable lens made of medical-grade polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) that is placed in front of your iris. The Verisyse is FDA approved for the correction of nearsightedness only.

  • Those most likely to benefit from ICLs are those with moderate to severe nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, and who are between the ages of 21 – 45 years old. Certain medical conditions may prevent you from being considered a candidate for ICLs. This includes eye diseases, such as glaucoma, iritis, or diabetic retinopathy. During a consultation at ART Vision, Dr. Tendler will discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and refractive error to determine a treatment method that will work for you and help to meet your unique needs.

  • Prior to your procedure day, Dr. Tendler will perform a peripheral iridotomy (YAG PI) to reduce any chance of pressure buildup within your eye due to the ICL placement. The ICL insertion, itself, is a brief procedure that is completed on an outpatient basis in the comfort of our ART Vision facility. Light anesthesia will be used while your ICLs are placed to keep you comfortable and relaxed. To complete the surgery, Dr. Tendler creates a very small incision at the outer edge of your cornea before folding the lens and inserting it through the incision and placing it into the proper position in the eye. From start to finish, the procedure should last no more than 15-30 minutes. Unlike other refractive laser procedures, only one eye is done at a time.

  • Your vision will be noticeably better almost immediately following the surgery and will continue to improve over the coming days. You will be able to return to work and most of your daily activities soon after your procedure. Patients should be careful not to rub or touch the eyes for five days after their placement surgery. An initial follow-up appointment will be scheduled by our team and will take place the same day, only a few hours after your procedure. Other appointments will be required so that Dr. Tendler can ensure you are recovering and healing well.

  • If you are in search of a long-term solution for your vision impairment and have moderate to severe nearsightedness with or without astigmatism, schedule a consultation at our Sioux Falls, SD office today. Even if you were told you could not have LASIK, there may still be alternatives for you. Dr. Alison R. Tendler can help reduce the impact of your nearsightedness in a fast and effective ICL placement procedure that will improve your vision and quality of life for years to come. Contact our helpful team today to set up your appointment at ART Vision. Let us help make the lifestyle change you seek so you can See the World Better and See Yourself Better.

LASIK

Laser Vision Correction Surgery (LASIK)

LASIK is a very popular and effective form of laser vision correction surgery. It minimizes the need for glasses or contact lenses.

  • LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, and it is one of the most popular and effective laser vision correction surgeries available today. LASIK is a refractive surgery that can improve or correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. LASIK is similar to other forms of refractive error surgery in that it reshapes the cornea to allow light to focus more perfectly on the retina. The procedure itself is highly effective, very fast, and extremely comfortable for most patients. At ART Vision, we understand that choosing to undergo LASIK surgery is one of the most important decisions of your life. The positive impact on overall quality of life, as well as creating clearer vision, cannot be understated. Finding increased freedom from glasses and contact lenses can change your lifestyle.  Meet with board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler during a comprehensive and individualized consultation to learn more about this exciting procedure.

  • Thanks to advances in the vision correction world, more patients than ever are candidates for LASIK. Patients with certain medical conditions and eye diseases may not be ideal candidates for LASIK but may qualify for other forms of vision correction surgery. During a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Alison R. Tendler, you will discuss your lifestyle and medical history to learn if you are a good candidate and if you should undergo surgery or not. In cases where patients shouldn't have LASIK surgery, they may be eligible for a procedure, such as PRK, implantable contact lenses(ICLs), or refractive lens exchange(RLE), all of which Dr. Tendler also performs.

  • Before initiating your procedure, you will be offered a mild sedative to help you relax. Your eyes will also be numbed with anesthetic eye drops. Next, Dr. Tendler will place a specialized eyepiece, which helps hold your eyelids open during the surgery. Using state-of the art laser technology, Dr. Tendler will then create a thin flap to the top of your cornea. Lastly, a second advanced laser is used to reshape your cornea, which is the step that allows Dr. Tendler to change your vision. When the laser correction procedure is complete, the thin corneal flap is gently laid back into place where it will heal on its own without the need for stitches. In many cases, patients can return to work or school the next day, though you will need a ride home following your surgery.

  • Immediately after surgery, a member of our team will do a brief examination to ensure your eyes look healthy before releasing you to go home. For the next 3-4 hours, you may feel mild irritation, stinging, or a foreign body sensation, like something is in your eye. It is important that you do not rub your eyes while they are healing and use frequent artificial tears. You will likely experience a bit of blurred vision and haziness for the first 24 hours following surgery. This is normal and your vision will begin to stabilize quickly. You should see marked improvement the following day. For some patients, full recovery takes a few weeks. You will be asked to return the next day for a follow-up visit, with further appointments as scheduled. These appointments are very important so that we can ensure you have healed properly and reached your desired result.

  • If you would like to learn whether you are a candidate for LASIK or any other vision correction procedures we offer, schedule a consultation at ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD today. Our skilled team, led by board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler, is ready and excited to help you achieve clearer vision and a higher quality of life by experiencing freedom from glasses and contact lenses. Photorefractive Keratectomy

Laser Vision Correction Surgery (PRK)

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a common form of laser vision correction surgery. It is highly effective and minimizes the need for glasses.

  • Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) was the very first form of laser vision correction surgery. It was designed to correct and improve common refractive vision errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. The PRK procedure consists of removing the thin outer layer of the cornea and reshaping the corneal tissue with a laser so that light can focus better on the retina. Though LASIK is often the go-to for laser vision correction today, PRK is a wonderful option for patients whose corneas are too thin for LASIK or when LASIK is not appropriate. The results provided by PRK are the same as other forms of vision correction, but the recovery is a bit longer. During an individualized consultation with board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler at her private practice, ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD, you can learn more about laser vision correction surgery and whether you are a candidate for PRK.

  • During your consultation at ART Vision, Dr. Tendler will perform an eye exam and determine characteristics such as the shape and thickness of your cornea, your refractive error, tear production, and the overall health of your eye before recommending PRK. The best candidates for PRK laser vision correction are at least 18 years of age, are not suffering from any ocular disease, and are not pregnant or breastfeeding. Ideal candidates for PRK are often not candidates for LASIK surgery. Other vision correction options may include implantable contact lenses (ICLs) or refractive lens exchange (RLE).

  • Immediately prior to your surgery, you will be offered mild oral sedation. Once you are at ease and ready for your procedure to begin, a member of Dr. Tendler's team will administer a numbing eye drop to both eyes before positioning an eyelid holder. This will keep your eyes open during surgery. First, Dr. Tendler will gently remove a thin portion of corneal tissue from the outer surface of the eye. Next, using a state-of-the-art excimer laser, your cornea will be reshaped to match your correction, allowing Dr. Tendler to change your vision for better clarity. This process is then repeated on the other eye. After finishing the laser portion of the procedure, a contact lens is placed in both eyes, protecting them from outside influence and to keep your eyes more comfortable while they begin the healing process. From start to finish, PRK surgery only lasts a few minutes.

  • The temporary contact lens that is serving as a bandage will help improve comfort as you heal. Patients can expect moderate discomfort in the first 3-4 days following surgery. Vision will fluctuate during that time. You will be able to return to work or school and begin driving again at about five days post-surgery. Over the coming weeks, you will need to attend several follow-up visits with ART Vision or your primary eye doctor, so that Dr. Tendler can monitor your recovery. Sensitivity to light could last as long as four weeks post-procedure. Most ART Vision patients report feeling back to normal in as little as one month after PRK with vision that continues to improve over the six months post-procedure.

  • PRK can help you live a higher quality life with clearer vision, giving you the confidence you seek by living freer from the need for glasses and contacts. If you are not a candidate for LASIK vision correction, you can still seek the visual freedom you desire and deserve with PRK. Contact our Sioux Falls, SD facility today to schedule a consultation with Dr. Alison R. Tendler and learn how quickly we can change your life with PRK so you can See the World Better and See Yourself Better.

Custom Lens Exchange

Lens Replacement

Custom Lens Exchange replaces the natural lens of your eye with one that can help minimize glasses for distance and/or near vision. A great option for ages 50+.

  • Custom Lens Exchange otherwise known as clear lens exchange, is a vision correction surgery that involves the removal of the eye's natural lens and replacement of the lens with an IOL (intraocular lens) implant. The surgery is highly effective for patients with any degree of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism, along with presbyopia (difficulty with near or reading vision). The surgical process is similar to the removal of a cataract, but is done for pure refractive surgery or vision correction desire, versus being medically necessary. This is best for patients who are over the age of 50, have not developed a cataract or have minimal cataract development, yet desire clearer vision and are seeking to gain independence from glasses or contacts for distance and near. Board-certified and fellowship trained ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler of ART Vision is proud to offer Custom Lens Exchange to patients of Sioux Falls, SD. Following a consultation, if it is found that Custom Lens Exchange is the best vision correction surgery for your lifestyle, your surgery will take place in our high-end, boutique style, state-of-the-art vision center.

  • Custom Lens Exchange can be a wonderful option for the right patient. You should have healthy eyes, optimally be over the age of 50, and also be experiencing presbyopia. Even if you are an ideal laser vision correction candidate (LASIK or PRK), due to your age and the continued aging changes of the natural lens, Custom Lens Exchange can be a long term option for refractive surgery worth considering. Because the natural lens is removed and replaced, you will also never develop a medical cataract. Candidates are generally able to see well at nearly all distances (distance and near) afterward and have a drastically reduced or possibly eliminated need for eyeglasses. The most impressive benefit of the procedure is its ability to correct multiple types of refractive errors, including nearsightedness and farsightedness, as well as astigmatism. Custom Lens Exchange is also an ideal option for patients with age-related vision loss, known as presbyopia. It can offer a better option for patients to obtain desired glasses reduction for both distance and near, versus having to choose one or the other, as can happen with traditional laser vision correction.

  • During Custom Lens Exchange, your natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, or IOL, in order to correct your unique refractive error. The brand or type of IOL that will be used will be chosen before your surgery depending upon your lifestyle goals. Many times, if appropriate, we utilize a multifocal lens to help patients achieve the crispest and clearest vision at all distances. Before beginning your procedure, Dr. Tendler will numb your eye and administer anesthesia. When you are comfortable and relaxed, Dr. Tendler will create a microscopic incision in the cornea, allowing her to remove the natural lens and then insert the the new artificial lens into the same exact place as the original one. Surgery is only performed on one eye at a time. Should you choose to undergo Custom Lens Exchange on both eyes, as most patients do, your procedures will be planned on separate days, 1 day to 1 week apart.. The procedure is quite quick, taking approximately 15 minutes per eye. The incision created in the cornea is so small that it does not require sutures. Your eye will heal on its own over the course of a few days following the procedure. Many patients enjoy better vision immediately following surgery, with stabilization occurring over the next several weeks.

  • Following surgery, you may feel slight discomfort, such a mild stinging. Vision can also be hazy. Vision improves quickly over the next few days. Post-operative instructions will be provided by a member of the ART Vision team, and prescription medications will be used to help prevent infection and reduce inflammation. You may experience temporary bouts of dry eye and blurred vision immediately following surgery, along with halos and glare. These symptoms are normal and will dissipate over time. It is important that you attend each scheduled follow-up visit so Dr. Tendler can monitor your healing and provide guidance as you work together to achieve your best vision.

  • Custom Lens Exchange is an outstanding option for those who desire improved vision and whom are evaluating laser vision correction procedures. Custom Lens Exchange reduces, and in some cases eliminates, the need for glasses or contact lenses, providing the freedom you desire, while eliminating the chance of developing cataracts. To schedule your consultation at ART Vision with Dr. Alison R. Tendler, contact our Sioux Falls, SD facility at your earliest convenience to find out how we can help you See the World Better and See Yourself Better.

Presbyopia

Vision Loss 40+

Presbyopia is the slow, natural, and progressive loss of near vision that takes place with all men and women as they reach and surpass the age of 40.

  • Many men and women notice a stark decline in their near visual acuity as they begin to age. This common occurrence is associated with the progressive vision loss known as presbyopia, which is quite simply age-related vision loss. A patient who had clear, crisp vision their entire life can be diagnosed with presbyopia after reaching the age of 40. Quite often, patients explain that their vision isn't as clear as it once was and that they are beginning to struggle to see clearly when reading a book or using their smartphone. You may feel the need to hold an object further away from your eyes when reading it. ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD offers comprehensive surgery consultations, diagnostic testing, and treatment options for patients who are experiencing the early onset of presbyopia and are tired of wearing reading glasses. Begin exploring advanced treatment options with ART Vision to diminish your need for reading glasses.

  • The most common symptom of presbyopia is the blurring of words and objects that are nearby. This typically begins at or around the age of 40 when the lenses of your eyes begin to lose a bit of their youthful flexibility. This is also called dysfunctional lens syndrome. Patients often begin to move things further away from their eyes so they can read/view them more clearly. It is very common for patients with undiagnosed presbyopia to believe their blurred vision is caused by poor lighting. Patients may also experience:

    • Headaches

    • Migraines

    • Eye strain

    • Fatigue

    • Eye pain after time spent reading, working on the computer, or using a smartphone or tablet

  • Where other common refractive errors (need for glasses) are caused by the unique shape of the eye, presbyopia is simply caused by the natural aging process of the lens. This will happen to everybody at some point. As we age, the natural lens of our eye becomes more and more dysfunctional. The lens proteins and fibers begin to thicken and harden, decreasing the its flexibility and ability to focus up close like it used to. Clarity is also decreased as the muscle fibers in the eyes change. Together, this dysfunctional lens syndrome makes it difficult for your eyes to focus on nearby items and objects as they did when they were younger.

  • ART Vision is proud to offer a number of long-term surgical correction options for the treatment of presbyopia, including laser, corneal inlays, and custom lens exchange. Following a detailed examination and diagnostic testing, board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler can meet with you during a comprehensive consultation to discuss your treatment options for vision correction surgery and to determine if you are an ideal candidate. Surgeries, such as PRK, LASIK, corneal inlays, and custom lens exchange have proven highly effective in the treatment of presbyopia for long-term relief and clearer, crisper near vision. ART Vision prides itself in helping you See the World Better and See Yourself Better. By reducing or eliminating your need for reading glasses, we can help you create the vision lifestyle you desire.

Astigmatism

Visual Impairment

Astigmatism is a very common visual impairment that is caused by the unique shape of the cornea. Most astigmatism can be fully corrected.

  • Astigmatism is a very common refractive error that is determined by the shape of your cornea. It can be present at birth (regular astigmatism) or caused by trauma or disease (irregular astigmatism). When the cornea is oblong versus round (think football vs. basketball shape), it prevents light from properly focusing on the retina, causing blurred vision. When left untreated, astigmatism can lead to eye fatigue, squinting, pain behind the eye, headaches, and migraines. The team at ART Vision, led by board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler, is skilled to diagnose and treat astigmatism through a variety of proven and effective options that will address your symptoms and help you see with more clarity. In fact, astigmatism is one of her favorite eye conditions to treat.

  • Because astigmatism is often combined with nearsightedness and/or farsightedness, the symptoms associated with the condition could vary greatly. Some of the most common symptoms of astigmatism include:

    • Double, shadowed, distorted, or blurred vision

    • Inability to see nearby items and objects clearly

    • Inability to see far-off items and objects clearly

    • Eye strain

    • Squinting

    • Frequent headaches

    • Headaches

    • Migraines

    • Eye strain

    • Fatigue

    • Eye pain after time spent reading, working on the computer, or using a smartphone or tablet

  • In most cases, a patient is born with astigmatism. However, injury and disease can sometimes cause the condition to develop later in a patient's life. Generally speaking, the most common cause of astigmatism is simply a more curved, or oblong, shape to the cornea.

  • After a thorough eye examination and diagnostic testing, a member of our ART Vision team will help you understand your vision condition and work to create a surgical treatment plan based upon your individual lifestyle, with the goal of decreasing your dependence upon glasses or contact lenses. Dr. Tendler will personally meet with you to discuss multiple effective and long-term solutions including the laser vision correction procedures LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis) and PRK (photorefractive keratectomy). At ART Vision, we also proudly offer specialized implants designed to reduce or eliminate your astigmatism, such as ICLs (implantable contact lenses), RLE (refractive lens exchange), and/or cataract surgery. All of these are highly effective options for the treatment of common refractive errors, such as astigmatism.

  • It is a common misperception that someone cannot have refractive surgery if they have astigmatism, or that it cannot be surgically treated. This is simply not true. In fact, there are great treatment options for astigmatism depending upon its amount and type, and your age, eye health, and visual lifestyle goals. If you are wearing glasses or contact lenses for your astigmatism and desire clearer vision and reduced dependence from them, contact our Sioux Falls, SD facility today to schedule a visit and learn about which customized surgical plan could work best for you. At ART Vision, we want to help restore your vision so you can See the World Better and See Yourself Better.

Myopia

Nearsightedness

A common vision impairment, myopia (most commonly referred to as nearsightedness) makes it difficult for individuals to see things that are far away.

  • At ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD, our team, led by board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler, is highly skilled in the diagnosis of nearsightedness and is equipped to recommend advanced vision correction solutions that will improve your overall quality of life to fit your lifestyle. Known as myopia by physicians, nearsightedness is one of the most common vision impairments, making objects at a distance tough to see with clarity. Individuals that are nearsighted typically see normally up close but have difficulty seeing clearly when viewing images that are at a distance. Nearsightedness affects roughly 30 percent of American men and women. But the great news is that there are several effective options available to cope with or correct your vision. If you have noticed a decline in your vision and are having trouble seeing from a distance, contact ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD to schedule a consultation and begin exploring your surgical treatment options.

  • While the most prominent sign of nearsightedness is the inability to see objects clearly when at a distance, other common symptoms may include:

    • Frequent headaches

    • Eye strain

    • Fatigue

Patients who were previously diagnosed with nearsightedness and have been prescribed eyeglasses or contacts but feel their lifestyle is impaired by their dependence upon these devices should schedule a consultation at ART Vision for a secondary opinion.

  • Generally speaking, the cause of myopia is a longer shaped eyeball or cornea that has a high curve. When light cannot properly focus on the back of the eye, objects and items appear blurred at certain distances. Nearsightedness is most often diagnosed in school-aged children, especially those who have a family history of vision impairment.

  • Before a surgical treatment plan is created, a member of our team will take special measures to properly diagnose your condition. Next, we will ask questions about your lifestyle and medical history. Finally, we will have you meet with Dr. Tendler to discuss your laser vision correction options. Surgeries, such as LASIK, PRK, or implantable contact lenses (ICLs) can greatly improve your vision and provide you with a long-lasting solution that may reduce or even eliminate your need for eyeglasses or contacts.

  • If your need for glasses or contacts are causing unpleasant symptoms and decreasing your overall quality of life, you deserve a solution that will address the root cause of the issue. At ART Vision, we pride ourselves on providing care that helps our patients take back their lives. Contact us at our Sioux Falls, SD facility today to schedule your consultation and discuss the surgery options we offer for myopia. Hyperopia

Farsightedness

Hyperopia is a vision condition that describes the ability to read or see objects that are far away but not those that are nearby.

  • Hyperopia, more commonly called farsightedness, affects one in every four Americans and is identified as the inability to clearly see objects or images that are nearby. In most cases, those with farsightedness see well from a distance and have no issues reading street signs while driving but may not be able to clearly read text messages on their phone or a menu at a restaurant. While hyperopia decreases a patients ability to see clearly up close, it can also cause an array of uncomfortable symptoms that work together to decrease your overall quality of life. At ART Vision, led by board-certified ophthalmologist Dr. Alison R. Tendler, our team works to diagnose and treat farsightedness, giving our patients the confidence to live their best lives.

  • Farsightedness, when left diagnosed, can cause eye strain, often leading to headaches, migraines, and fatigue. Other common symptoms of farsightedness may include:

    • Burning and aching in and behind the eyes.

    • Discomfort when writing, reading, and working at the computer.

If you have been diagnosed with farsightedness and have a prescription for eyeglasses or contacts, but you are still experiencing the symptoms of vision impairment, you can schedule an exam at ART Vision so our team can determine if you are a good candidate for surgical vision correction and discuss your treatment options.

  • In most cases, farsightedness is present at birth and is caused by an eye that is shorter than normal or a cornea that has a lower curvature. On a positive note, it is possible for children to outgrow the condition as their eyes continue to grow and develop during their childhood. Farsightedness is highly hereditary and is very likely to be passed down from generation to generation. Sometimes, farsightedness is confused for presbyopia (i.e. age-related near vision loss) in older individuals. However, the two conditions are not connected and are caused by different contributing factors.

  • After a thorough eye examination and diagnostic testing, Dr. Tendler and her team will create a treatment plan that meets your needs and matches your lifestyle. Before recommending any type of surgical options, we will work to understand your unique needs so that we find a solution that truly works for you. Hyperopia can be treated with surgeries, such as LASIK and PRK, which Dr. Tendler has years of experience in. To learn whether you are a candidate for these procedures, contact our Sioux Falls facility to schedule your consultation.

  • If your need for glasses and contacts are causing unpleasant symptoms and decreasing your overall quality of life, and you would like to reduce or eliminate these vision aides, we highly recommend you schedule a visit to ART Vision in Sioux Falls, SD.
